Kiwi fruit DNA
Class 1a1 did an experiment last week as part of their reproduction topic. Their task was to extract some DNA from Kiwi fruits. Read all about their experiences and thoughts on this experiment by clicking here...
On Friday We Were Extracting D.N.A From A Kiwi. First We Squashed Up The Kiwi In A Plastic Bag Then We Added Washing Up Liquid And Put It In A Water Bath For 15 Minutes After 15 Minutes We Then Put It In A Test Tube Then We Added Methylated Spirits Slowly And Then Put It In Ice We Soon Seen D.N.A From A Kiwi
I Think This Was A Good Experiment Because I Will Probably Never See D.N.A Again. It Was A Fun Opportunity To See D.N.A
On Friday we got a kiwi fruit and we did an experiment, we had to extract DNA from it we did this by getting a plastic self seal bag and out the kiwi in it.
Then we sealed the bag and squished the kiwi into a mush, we had to get as many lumps out as possible.
After we opened the bag we had to pour fairy liquid into the bag and then seal it, then we put it in a water bath for 15 mins.
After we extracted the liquid, and put it in a boiling tube we filled it up to a quarter and put it in ice then we added meths.
We poured it carefully down the side and left it for a couple of mins then we saw the strands of DNA floating in the meths.
Thoughts:
I thought it was cool but it looked strange and gooey I would like to see it again but I doubt I will
I thought it was fun to do because it was the first time I had seen DNA
Extracting D.N.A of a kiwi First we got a kiwi and put it in a plastic bag. Then we squashed it with our hands. Then we added washing up liquid and put it in a water bath for fifteen minutes. After that we put it in a test-tube and added mentholated spirit and put the test tube in ice. After a couple of minutes the white strands of D.N.A showed.
I thought this experiment was inspirational and educational I really enjoyed it. It was a once in a life time opportunity to see real D.N.A from a living thing.
We did the experiment so we could see D.N.A from a real living thing instead of reading about it.
We did an amazing experiment to extract DNA. It was quite a complicated job and it had to be done very carefully. I really hoped it would work well. How fantastic to get the chance to see and handle all the genetic information from a kiwi. Wow! My experiment worked and lots of stringy DNA was suspended in the test tube. I took some out, with a hook, to have a closer look. Amazing the first and possibly the last time I would ever get to do this.
First we got a kiwi and put it in a plastic bag. Then we squished it with our hands. Then we added washing up liquid and put it in water bath for fifteen minutes. After that we put it in a test tube with cold ice to cool it down, till we finally saw DNA appearing in the test tube.
I thought this was a great experiment because this will only be the only opportunity I will get to see some DNA of a living thing.
We did this experiment to see a real part of DNA instead of reading all about it.
We did an experiment about getting DNA from a kiwi fruit. First we put the kiwi in the bag and squished it then we added 50cm3 of extraction solution and squished it again. We placed the bag in a heat bath for at least 15 minutes. While the bag was in the heat bath we put the funnel in the test tube and the paper in the funnel. After the 15 minutes was over we poured it into the test tube and poured meths into it and put it in the ice as it cooled down the DNA appeared at the top of the meths.
We enjoyed this experiment because it was good seeing DNA and we will probably never see DNA again and you got to squish kiwi. We also thought that it was good seeing how it was done. By Caitlin and Kayleigh
We did an experiment to extract DNA from a kiwi .First we got the equipment together and set it up. We got the kiwi and squished it into a plastic bag then we added 50 cm3 of extraction solutions then we put in a water bath for 15 minutes, we took the mushed up kiwi and filtered it into the test tube to get the liquid out, we added mentholated spirits down the side of the test tube and then we put it into a beaker of ice to let it cool down. When we took the test tube out of the ice we saw strands of DNA rising up.
We liked this experiment because we got to see the strands of DNA rising up from the liquid we also liked squishing the kiwi.

We squashed the kiwi fruit up in a bag and the added a solution which was made of washing up liquid and salt then we put the bag in a water bath then after 15 minutes take the bag out and pour the mixture through funnel with a piece of filter paper in it until the test tube was a quarter full then we put the test tube in a beaker of ice. After the liquid was cool we put mentholated sprit down the side of the test tube very slowly. Then we put the test tube back in the ice until the strands of DNA appeared at the top of the purple mentholated sprit. I then pulled the DNA out of the test tube.
I thought that the DNA experiment was very fun because it was the first that had seen DNA strands appear out of the liquid and I felt so good because I had extracted DNA from a fruit.
